Active firewalls use Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) to inspect every packet of data that goes in or out, delivering a high level of protection and allowing you to set specific standards for what comes in and what goes out of your network.

Passive firewalls use a system called NAT (Network Address Translation) to hide the individual computers on your network from outsiders. All that outsiders can see is the router. This offers an essential level of security and is standard on all NetComm routers.
